Education - OCIA

Are you interested in becoming Catholic?

What does the process of becoming Catholic look like?

The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (or OCIA) is a process of growth and discernment regarding the Catholic Church and a person’s free choice to become a member. Throughout this process, candidates engage in the study of Catholic teaching, prayer, discussion, and discernment. At the conclusion of this instruction and based on one’s preparedness, the candidate it ready to join the church. Through the reception of the sacraments of invitation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist), participants become full members of the Catholic faith.

Who is the OCIA for?

  • Those who have not received the sacrament of Baptism.
  • Those who have been baptized in another religion, and are considering becoming Catholic and receiving their First Communion and Confirmation.
  • Those who are Catholic and have been baptized, but have not received any instruction in preparing for First Communion and Confirmation and wish to do so.

Join the OCIA Team!

People preparing for the Sacraments need sponsors and community support to help them grow in faith. The OCIA team of sponsors help guide, support and instruct those discerning whether to become members of our Catholic community. Team members share their faith with inquiring adults or children who are seeking more information about the Catholic Church, many of whom seek to celebrate one or more of the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation.

An OCIA team member could also lead Breaking Open the Word, which takes place on Sundays. After the homily candidates are dismissed from Mass to be nourished by Scripture, since they cannot yet be nourished by the Eucharist. Two volunteers are needed to lead these sessions from November through Easter.

Training is provided for any role within the OCIA program.
