Heroes Park

Heroes Park signIn the fall of 2001, the Parish of Our Lady of Consolation, the Diocese of Gary, and the Town of Merrillville entered into a lease agreement for one and one half acres of land to be used for a Town Park.

Father Vamos was asked to select a name for the park. The name selected was Heroes Park, since it came after September 11, 2001 and thus named in honor of all law enforcement agencies, firemen, medics, and extended to all local persons of the same occupations. It also includes parents and anyone who feels they are a hero in eyes of others.

The park came out of a community meeting to address the needs of the neighborhood. The great need was a park. There were no parks at the time South of Route 30. So Heroes Park is a great addition to the neighborhood community of Independence Hill.

The Town of Merrillville has installed playground equipment and a sign with the park name. There are future plans to upgrade the baseball field and perhaps to make a soccer field. The lease agreement is for seven years with provisions to extend the lease.
